Save The Dome at CCC!

As most of y’all know I am very involved in the church and we have a major campaign going. Central Christian Church was built in 1911so the building is 103 years old so needless to say it has its creaks and quirks. And an old building does wear down. After years of trying to patch the memorable gold dome up, it has now come to the point that it either needs to be repaired completely or taken off. So we started a capital campaign called ” Save the Dome” to raise money to completely redo the dome. Over the past couple of week, Disciples of Christ on Campus, our college ministry has been blanketing Murfreesboro and picking up donations for a yard sale.
Because what better way is there to raise money than to have a large yard sale.

There was not a shortage of donations to be found. We have a large painting collection, a huge coca cola collection, as well as clothes, house wares, and a large book collection!

We are trying to spread the word to everyone in Murfreesboro about our sale so that we can save our beloved dome that has been on our building for over 100 years.

So whether you are a book lover, looking for that perfect piece of furniture for house, or just want to drop by to grab a plate of barbeque that we will be selling for lunch (only $5). Please come and see us. We have amazing deals and let us know how you found out about our sale.

I absolutely love the church I’ve grown up in and who wouldn’t when you can explain that you go to the church with the big gold dome on the square! (Yes it is not a mosque).

So come by tommorow from 7am-12 and grab some deals and some grub!

Post-July 4th…Post :)

So of course it’s me again….and it’s sad to say that it’s been quite a while since I last posted anything on my blog. But in my defense a lot has been happening!

First off, I successfully completed my Junior year of college. One more year and then it’s on to graduate school (such a scary thought!). I have also started and am half way through my summer internship which is at the Domestic Violence Shelter. I’ve been shadowing the child advocate and learning how to assist the children as they go through the difficult transitions in their lives. It’s been very interesting and I’ve been learning a lot.

But as we all know, this past weekend was Fourth of July weekend. A weekend that is supposed to be full of outdoor fun, parties, barbecue, fireworks, and people. Well, this weekend I found out that the saying  “you’re an old soul” actually applies to me. Here is my proof…

1. All I wanted to do this weekend was stay indoors, cuddle up on the couch and read

2. My parents wanted to go out and watch the fireworks in town…I seriously contemplated telling them I didn’t want to go so that I could fulfill #1

3. Once we arrived at said fireworks place, there were two kids (one 16 year-old and a 5 year-old) who were being so disrespectful to their grandma that I wanted to literally go up to them and slap them silly (not that I would actually do something like that)

4. Fireworks scare the crap out of me. I probably jumped 20 times throughout this weekend when I was surprised by unexpected fireworks

5. I don’t like how loud fireworks are.

So over all, I learned that I am either “an old soul” or just really lazy….I’ll let you decide.

On a totally different note. As some of you know I’ve been slowly but surely working on a novel and while I have completed my character development, setting, and tentative plot outline…. I am now completely stuck. It’s a weird feeling sitting in front of a blank piece of paper (whether it be on my computer or a legit piece of lined paper) feeling lost about how I really want to start my story. Now I know that nothing is set in stone and regardless what I write in the first draft more than likely it will change, but it is a weird and frightening feeling. It’s intimidating yet exciting at the same time. I have so many ideas I want to get down….the execution of it is just a little sketchy to me. So what am I going to do? Consult the experts! I’m planning on  emailing two authors I know to get some writing advise from them.   I’m hoping something that they say(email) will inspire me to take the plunge and just start writing. Starting something new is always a little strange at first but when you talk it out with someone and get advise sometimes things become a little easier. We shall see what happens in the coming week. Hopefully I will begin to first draft of my first ever novel this week.

There is a lot of new things happening in my life and I just have to say I am really excited to see where the road takes me! I’ll blog again soon!

God Bless!

New Year Update and a Little Rant

So another year has come and gone. We are officially in 2014! I hope everyone accomplished their New Year’s Resolutions that they had in 2013….as for me I mega failed. Now I will go ahead and tell everyone what I hope to (but probably won’t) accomplish this year for my New Year’s Resolution (even though I’m a couple days late).

For 2014 I plan on doing a lot more than the previous year.

1. Read more books than I did in 2013 (you can keep an eye on my reading list page on this blog)

2. Work out every week, at least twice a week.

3. Post a blog at least once a week (which was a challenge last year as some of you noticed)

4. Finish my book! Which was actually started but never finished during National Novel Writing November.

This is all I can think of for the moment for my New Year’s Resolution but I will be sure to update more if I think of anything new.

This evening I was at my Mema’s (which is what we call my Grandma here in the South) and I stole my little cousin’s cell phone, just to look around and see what she has been up to and partially just to annoy her. As I browsed through her Instagram and saw all the people she didn’t know who she was following, I was shocked to see how many of these people were posting “like me” pictures. It was almost like these kids were basing their self-worth based solely on the responses that they received through social media. This is what our younger generation is doing. They are so entrapped by social media and what others think about them. They are more concerned about how many Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook followers they have.

They don’t even know how to communicate without a textual device on their person!

There is something wrong with this picture. What happened to the “good-old days” when kids would stay out till dark playing outside. Or would rather read a novel than shoot up zombies on a video game consul. Now I do admit to liking to play video games, but kids these days are more interested in leveling up their character and less interested in what is going on in the world around them.

But this epidemic of gaining someone’s self-worth through social media isn’t just hitting the younger generation. Today’s college students have found an app that judges someone’s “hotness”. From what I understand you get to judge a person purely on their looks on whether they are “hot” or “not”….why in the world would we want to use an app like this?!?! It promotes the habit of judging someone purely on their looks and what clothing they have on. And frankly I must say this is an appalling thing. We are called to not judge others based on their ethnicity, race, religion, habits, sins, or looks and even if you aren’t a Christian like I am, this is a fundamentally kind thing we all come from different walks of life and have our own sins why would we want to judge them when most of the time we don’t want others judging us(well in most circumstances). We can’t judge a book by it’s color, and we can’t judge a person by what they look like. We also shouldn’t be pining for other’s affections or approval for the actions and choices we make in our day to day lives. We need to do what we have to do to make ourselves proud of our inner selves, not achieve other’s satisfactions.  Now I’m not saying I’m perfect, I know when I’m walking across campus I judge people on their looks and note who I find attractive but everyone does that in their minds….but taking it as far as an app to solely judge others is taking it a little to far.

Your family will always love you through thick and thin. And hopefully, if you haven’t already, you will find that one man or woman who will love you for who you are and what you stand for, but for now let’s cut this “social media acceptance” out of our lives. It’s ok to be on social media and use it to connect with friends and keep in touch, but these posts about “if you like me comment, if you love me like this picture” is ridiculous. God made us all in his image, and that image is glorious. I am officially done ranting, I have said my peace and I will now commence to step off of my “soap box”.

I want to hear other’s opinions on this subject! Please comment! I am now headed to finish some much needed chores…

Talk to ya’ll soon 🙂

A Little Update

So I know I’m horrible at updating blogs and I also always say that I am going to get better at posting more…..but I think that jinks me! So I am not going to do it today! (Or have I already jinxed myself by mentioning the jinx in the first place??)

So as some of you know, I am taking the majority of my classes online this semester. This has turned out to be a little of a challenge with the enormous amount of reading you have to do (which I am actually procrastinating on an essay just to write this blog. But who doesn’t procrastinate right?) Between classes, Sigma Alpha, work, and church I am amazed to say that it is finally OCTOBER!!! It’s time for ghosts and ghouls, candy and fun!!!! Can you tell that this is one of my most favorite times of the year? I am especially excited about a Halloween carnival that my church is putting on for the Domestic Violence Shelter in town, which I am of course helping to decorate!

But another reason that I am excited that October is here, is it is time to start planning for NaNoWriMo!! As I’ve said before I was starting to write a novel, but that has kind of hit a wall. So, instead I have decided to do NaNoWriMo this year and hopefully get some of these ideas that I have been itching to get down on paper out! Wish me luck!

Last but not least! Since it is October that means Fall Break! Which is finally here for us poor college students but sadly this Fall Break is going to be spent studying in preparation to get all my homework done before next weekend! I’m trying to get a head of the ball so that I can relax when the college group goes on a Fall Retreat to Christmont which is a camp type retreat in North Carolina! It’s going to be gorgeous and it’ll be good to get away for a while.
Now that I have sufficiently procrastinated on my essay which is now due is 3 hrs I should probably go write a little.

I hope everyone is stopping to smell the roses every now and then!

Nicole 🙂

How to nail Nanowrimo – post at Writers & Artists

NaNoWriMo is on it’s way! I can’t believe it’s already that time of year again, better start planning!

Nail Your Novel

nano1nailnanowaNearly November! I’m at Writers & Artists today with a preparation regime for November’s big writing event, National Novel-Writing Month (NaNoWriMo).

It’s ultra-streamlined to suit all writing approaches. If you like to create a detailed synopsis, my tips will get you going. If you want only the barest essentials, they’ll guide you while giving you room to explore and express. And if you’re still undecided or wonder if NaNoWriMo is even possible, hopefully they’ll persuade you to take the plunge.

A Crazy Summer-A Quick Update

So, as I’ve posted a couple times already….this summer has been ridiculously busy. Between church events, mission weeks, work, and family being in town I think it has been almost as busy as last semester (which is saying something, because I can’t even remember all I did last semester). Anyway, over the last couple weeks since my last blog update I’ve had a few random thoughts that I’ve been meaning to post. So, I’ve decided to put them all in one blog 🙂 So here goes nothing!

1. Kids and Energy- As I mentioned, I’ve been spending a lot of time with my family lately and even recently went to a big family reunion (I also just got finished babysitting my little cousin who is 8 years old) and all I have to say is were do these kids get all their energy. I mean I’m a pretty busy person and I have a lot of energy, but kids these days just seem to have an over abundance of energy. They never want to stop! But along with that energy comes an innocence that I believe we could all learn from. Not only do children look up to adults to help them learn about the world, but they genuinely look at the world and see it as a magical place with things that are meant to  discovered and explored. I strongly believe that as college students and adults, we have gotten used to the day to day grid, the seemingly rat-race of life, and we forget to look outside of our own boxes and see the wonders of the world that surround us. Life isn’t always about money and fixing problems, its about living life to the fullest and doing what you love to do.

2. Reality T.V.- My father and I are avid Big Brother watchers. And yes the show is full of lies, cheating, backstabbing, etc. But it’s a very entertaining show, it’s kind of like watching a big train wreck….you just can’t take your eyes off of it. Now as far as I’m concerned the last 14 seasons have been relatively ok, yet it still shocks me sometimes what these contestants will do on the show when they are fully aware that “America is watching 24/7”. The biggest shocker of the season so far has been that one of the players has been making some very racist comments about other house guests ethnic groups, yet when she was confronted by someone about this she blatantly said it was not true. This is why I would never go on a show like Big Brother. Not only do your true colors show, but everything is put out there for EVERYONE to know and it truly effects your personal life afterwards. Which is definitely not worth half a million dollars.

3. Writing- Update on my book…..well it hasn’t been started yet. But I’ve recently acquired a old electric typewriter which I have been messing around with for a while now. Because of this rather awesome gift, I have been playing around with the idea of actually getting one of the really old typewriters. My question to ya’ll is….does anyone know the best place to look for one?

4. Mission Trip- This past week my mom and I took our church Youth Group on a week long mission trip. We stayed in town, but for a full week we worked at the local Domestic Violence Shelter. We cleaned their whole building, painted a jungle mural on the wall, and did some much needed work around the church as well. I was so proud of these young guys and gals for their enthusiasm for helping the shelter out. They worked very hard and really showed the light of Christ by doing great deeds. We were exhausted by the end of the week, but it was a good feeling to just put aside my busy schedule and give back to the community.

5. Disciples University/Christian Young Adults Fellowship (C.Y.A.F.)- Those of you who know me, know that I am largely involved in my church and the ministries that we support. Well let’s add another thing to my list 🙂 We are starting a college group at our church and I am spear-heading the movement. So far I’ve got a teacher, a room, and a small group of college students who are very eager to start the group. We got the name, Disciples University, from the idea of Monster’s University, and the young adults are running with the idea. We are creating shirts, painting a mural, cleaning up the room, and are gearing up for what I hope will be a very fun and interesting first semester for our group. We are also planning on starting an MTSU Disciples group at the Middle Tennessee State University campus here in town so that we can invite and be in fellowship with Disciples of Christ from all over Tennessee. This looks like a very promising group and if anyone is interested in joining just comment below and I can get you some information about either or both groups 🙂

Well that’s basically it. I’ve been busy and seem to keep getting busier but I’ll always have some time to update what’s going on/some of my thoughts throughout the week.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful week. And don’t forget to take a break every once in awhile to smell the roses!

DFTBA (let me know if you know what this means too! :D)

So Hi Again!

So yeah, I am horrible at updating 🙂

Update on my life so far….

I’ve recently started a job, which to say the least isn’t all that fun but you have to work if you want to get a paycheck right? Anyway it’s basically doing inventory at one of the warehouses that my dad supplies staff for. The job only lasts for a couple weeks so I will soon be back to being lazy around the house….well at least until term starts back.

Besides that and a very unfortunate upper respiratory infection that I’m just getting over, my life hasn’t been all that exciting. But that’s beside that point. Today, while watching BBC Sherlock and making a very exciting gift for my best friend (which I will not describe because I know she will probably read this blog) I got the writing bug again :D.

Yep that’s right, I am going to try and write some more of my book (even though it’s a different idea, for a totally different book). But that’s how it goes isn’t it? Ideas come and ideas go, some are good and some….well really suck. 🙂 I’ll keep ya’ll updated on how this book idea pans out 🙂 How knows I might have one of ya’ll proof read it, if she wants to.

😀 Talk to ya’ll soon!
