Are We Too Connected?

So in the last couple of blogs I’ve done I’ve noticed that I comment quiet a bit about social media and the effects that it seems to be having on our generation. And I promise that I am not anti-technology but something happened recently that shocked me so much that I must share it.

Let me set the scene…

On Monday (last week), I was at my Mema’s eating lunch and my cousin was sitting across from me watching a YouTube video from one of the O2L guys. Apparently this guy has decided that because of personal reasons he is going to stop vlogging. The sad part of this video, which I over-heard, was that he had to express and plead with his viewers to not be mad or upset that he was quitting blogging. As if he needed to justice his reasons and tell his fans not to hate him and do anything rash just because he wasn’t going to post anymore. What happened next was even more astonishing. Not only did my cousin cry, rather a lot, the fact that this guy wasn’t blogging anymore actually made her very depressed for the whole day.

I find this reaction to be very strange. Well to me anyway. I mean I get emotionally involved with the books I read and the movies I watch but overall I know that it’s not the end of the world when the story ends. And my best-friend and I are totally obsessed with certain actors who might have the initials of TH and BC :)!  Yet if they decided to stop acting we wouldn’t start freaking out like so many of the girls have done over this O2L thing. The reactions, all over the internet, about this boy not vlogging anymore is crazy. There are a lot of tweens and young adults who are genuinely upset and I wanted to make a point out of this…

It seems that teens and young adults of our generation have become so immersed in  the internet and instant-gratification that they get detached from the reality that the people that blog, vlog, and post things on the internet are actually real people, with real events going on in their lives. They get so attached to the fact that these vloggers post every other day that they expect it to happen and when it doesn’t they get angry and upset. It just seems so strange.

I am not a hermit. I have certain vloggers that I watch such as the Vlogbrothers and the Skit Guys. But if they ended up not posting videos anymore I would understand. It’s their choices to post videos and invite the world into their lives and frankly if they stopped posting I would astonishingly have more time on my hands! Go figure! So maybe it’s time that the youth of our generation “unplug” from the internet and go socialize with some actual people who can hear you speak to them and will really talk back to what you say. Or at least get some perspective on the aspect of the internet and realize that when someone “takes a break” from vlogging or posting that there is normally a reason behind it and that you should respect their space and not freak out about it.

End of rant I swear 🙂

Now on to other news….

1. I met with a local author and received some pointers on writing! I have some great ideas and it seems to have helped me a lot with my book. It’s going well and I’m hoping to keep it going that way! It’s really exciting!!!

2. As for unplugging. My college ministry will be going on a Faith Building Weekend in two weeks! We are headed up to Defeated Creek camp grounds and are going to be camping there all weekend. It should be interesting since some of these girls have never slept out in a tent on the floor before, or at least would rather not. It will be a huge step for a lot of them. And we will be hiking and swimming and talking about God 🙂 It will be a great time hopefully! So keep us in your prayers.

Until Next Time!

Post-July 4th…Post :)

So of course it’s me again….and it’s sad to say that it’s been quite a while since I last posted anything on my blog. But in my defense a lot has been happening!

First off, I successfully completed my Junior year of college. One more year and then it’s on to graduate school (such a scary thought!). I have also started and am half way through my summer internship which is at the Domestic Violence Shelter. I’ve been shadowing the child advocate and learning how to assist the children as they go through the difficult transitions in their lives. It’s been very interesting and I’ve been learning a lot.

But as we all know, this past weekend was Fourth of July weekend. A weekend that is supposed to be full of outdoor fun, parties, barbecue, fireworks, and people. Well, this weekend I found out that the saying  “you’re an old soul” actually applies to me. Here is my proof…

1. All I wanted to do this weekend was stay indoors, cuddle up on the couch and read

2. My parents wanted to go out and watch the fireworks in town…I seriously contemplated telling them I didn’t want to go so that I could fulfill #1

3. Once we arrived at said fireworks place, there were two kids (one 16 year-old and a 5 year-old) who were being so disrespectful to their grandma that I wanted to literally go up to them and slap them silly (not that I would actually do something like that)

4. Fireworks scare the crap out of me. I probably jumped 20 times throughout this weekend when I was surprised by unexpected fireworks

5. I don’t like how loud fireworks are.

So over all, I learned that I am either “an old soul” or just really lazy….I’ll let you decide.

On a totally different note. As some of you know I’ve been slowly but surely working on a novel and while I have completed my character development, setting, and tentative plot outline…. I am now completely stuck. It’s a weird feeling sitting in front of a blank piece of paper (whether it be on my computer or a legit piece of lined paper) feeling lost about how I really want to start my story. Now I know that nothing is set in stone and regardless what I write in the first draft more than likely it will change, but it is a weird and frightening feeling. It’s intimidating yet exciting at the same time. I have so many ideas I want to get down….the execution of it is just a little sketchy to me. So what am I going to do? Consult the experts! I’m planning on  emailing two authors I know to get some writing advise from them.   I’m hoping something that they say(email) will inspire me to take the plunge and just start writing. Starting something new is always a little strange at first but when you talk it out with someone and get advise sometimes things become a little easier. We shall see what happens in the coming week. Hopefully I will begin to first draft of my first ever novel this week.

There is a lot of new things happening in my life and I just have to say I am really excited to see where the road takes me! I’ll blog again soon!

God Bless!
